Many of the working conditions, you take for granted, were earned by Unions. Union achievements include, the five-day work week, eight-hour work day, competitive salaries, benefits, duty to accommodate, pay equity, vacations, holidays, safety standards and medicare. Fifty years ago, many of these working conditions were unthinkable.

You have the ability to shape the future through your National Component of the PSAC.

Your Union is a forward-thinking, progressive body which derives its resourcefulness

from the members. If you want to be part of the solution, you need to be part of the

process!

 Consider the value of signing a Union card

You’ll be part of the network to improve and protect wages and working conditions.

You’ll have peace of mind. During uncertain times it’s important to know that you can't be fired

without just cause or laid off without recourse.

You’ll become a member of a supportive team that champions the rights of workers.

You’ll be part of the process that drives contract negotiations. Through your Union you’ll

decide what demands get proposed, elect the bargaining team and vote to approve

the contract.

You’ll be afforded the opportunities to improve and upgrade your skills through union

sponsored training and education - consequently enhancing your ability to protect

your rights and those of your co-workers.

You’ll be empowered to elect or challenge those Union representatives who

will help you and your colleagues should your rights not be respected.

You’ll secure an opportunity to speak out and influence government and

public policy. Your Union provides a unique forum to directly and

indirectly impact quality of life issues such as health, education,

human rights, peace keeping, social justice and globalization.

You’ll have a mechanism to deal with day-to-day problems in

the workplace before they become big issues.

You’ll be entitled to strike pay in the event of a job action

such as a strike. Without a signed Union Card you may

not have access to strike pay.

You’ll have access to experts who can guide and

represent you in workplace-related disputes.

You’ll be entitled to take advantage of special discount

programs. The size, of the Public Service Alliance of

Canada, allows it to negotiate significant discounts for

home, auto and life insurance. As a member, these

discount programs are available to you.
